Last Man Standing - Recap and Results

Last Man Standing brought a night of amateur fighting to 4 Seasons Mixed Martial Arts in Lexington. A night that was slated for a full fight card was whittled down to 9 fights due to no show fighters. Jason Jones and company made the best out of the situation and still put on several exciting fights. I can only imagine how hard it was to scramble last minute to fill out the card but in a rare occurrence the majority of the fights went to a decision.

Fight of The Night
Bill Poe vs Steven Bell

This fight was three rounds in the middleweight division. Poe 6-4, representing UNICA MMA in Morehead) held a much higher level of ground game. Starting early he used his jiu-jitsu to offset the heavy hands of Bell. Bell (3-1, representing 4 Seasons) was able to stir up the action with his punching. Both fighters seemed at times to struggle with their cardio but as soon as it looked like they were gassed they pulled out all of the stops. Bell worked quite a bit of ground and pound in the 2nd round and Poe looked to be in trouble. When both fighters came to their feet Poe showed that his striking was not to be underestimated. The 3rd round was a total back and forth war. A mixture of great striking and well executed take downs is what I suspect swayed the judges decision. The crowd was in a frenzy during this battle. After a couple minutes Billy Poe's hand was raised in a 30-27 (Poe) 29-28(Bell) and 29-28(Poe) split decision victory.

Knockout of The Night
Keith Gilyard

When a heavyweight fighter enters the cage and does back flips it is a pretty good indicator he is a good athlete. Keith Gilyard  (1-0) did just that after weighing in at 222. He started and finished the fight using a very tactical approach. His striking was spot on and with a couple big fists he knocked out Justin Saunders (0-1) in the first round.

Bluegrass MMA Warrior Award
Josh Dawson

Dawson, 3-2 representing Georgetown MMA, was the reason that the 9th fight happened. Hell he was the reason the very first fight happened. Josh started the night at 1-2 and fought a very tough young man named Issac Franks(0-0, Slaughterhouse MMA).  Dawson won the fight via unanimous decision. He agreed shortly thereafter to second fight of the night. In the battle with Franks most of the fight was focused on the wrestling and jiu-jitsu aspect. Not so much in his second go around. He used his striking to dismantle Dustin Watkins (1-1, Iron Cobra MMA) in just over a minute into the first round. Josh looks to have a lot of potential and Adam Gomez was a proud coach after this night.
