Featured Gym - Georgetown MMA

Travelling across the state covering MMA in Kentucky has been such a rewarding experience. I have had the pleasure of meeting great people and learning so much about the sport. One of those great people is Adam Gomez. Adam, who is from California, came to Kentucky and began training guys from his garage. Those days are long gone as he has a strong contingent of members and fighters at his gym, Georgetown MMA.

I had the honor of being invited to Georgetown MMA last week. Tucked away in a shopping center it was in a great location. I walked in to find exactly what I had expected, competitors working hard. In the gym I found professional fighters Doug Ballinger and Tyrelle Olding. Both of them are such great guys and to actually get to watch them train was a trip. Fresh off a workout himself Adam met me and we chatted about Doug's next fight , how Tyrelle was doing coming off of a loss and the future of some of the other guys in the gym.  What was the most surprising about my trip was how family friendly the place was. There were several children hanging out in the gym while their parents were training. It brings a whole new meaning to the team being a family.

Adam prides himself on being a well rounded instructor hitting all of the major aspects of MMA. He works the guys through several different disciplines and sees to it that they improve on their weakness and capitalize on their strengths. Not all of his classes are geared strictly to his fight team though. There are brutal conditioning sessions and weight training that goes on. They gym is open to men and women of all ages with classes for the beginner to the most advanced.

What sets Georgetown MMA apart from other places is the emphasis they put on building the complete athlete. Adam is very demanding and conscious of the people he trains. He takes his job very serious and takes cornering fighters as a huge task. You can't walk in and expect to train for a week and have Gomez put you in a fight. He focuses on cultivating the competitor in you and ensuring that you are ready for the challenge. It's that mentality that garners respect. Adam takes their best interest to heart and cares about what they are doing. He is very close with his guys and shares his knowledge with them.

If you interested in what Adam and Georgetown MMA have to offer you can contact him at teamunleashed@gmail.com. His guys get back in action July 23rd for Hard Rock MMA in Lawrenceburg, KY!

Absolute Action XV- A Review

As I was rolling into the Midwest Sports Complex something caught my attention. It wasn't my first trip there and I am no stranger at being early but on this occasion a big van outside grabbed my focus. It was the Wazoo production truck. It was at that moment I realized what I had been talking about for weeks was true. They hype was here. Absolute Action could not afford to slip up tonight because they had an audience and a much larger audience than expected.

From the first bout through the Main Event of the evening there was something in the air. Excitement? Well maybe that. Energy? Thats always there. It is something I can't quite put into words and you had to be there to take it all in. DJ Cincy had the lights and sounds bumping as is the norm for a Parag Patel/Billy Donovan event. When Cyrus Fees grabbed the mic and kicked things off it was electric for almost 4 solid hours.  The athletes showed up for this show. All of the fights were entertaining and each competitor laid it on the line in front of everyone in attendance and the possible hundreds of thousands watching on broadcast television. Normally after a show I have no problem picking my awards and direction in to which my praise should go. This event however was much harder.
