Greg Maynard is no stranger to the Kentucky MMA scene. This guy has been training and fighting here for a while now. He has worked his way through the amateur ranks and was slated to be on the March 5th Strikeforce card but had to pull out due to a torn bicep. He has jumped in to help Brandon Newsome with the Gruesome MMA show and took some time to answer a few of our questions....
First off, give us a brief history of Gruesome MMA.
Gruesome MMA was founded and promoted by Brandon Newsome and he had his first show May 28th 2010. The second show was on October 23rd. He brought me on board to be the full time match maker and to help with advertising. We feel like we have a little momentum heading into this show as we are already working towards the next show. We are looking at a possible May 7th date for the 4th show.
With you being a fighter yourself what excites you about your upcoming show and what should people be looking for?
It’s a different challenge, I always welcome something new. It’s been an eye opening experience moving to this side of the business. The thing that excites me the most about this upcoming show is bringing the level of talent in that the fans of Eastern Kentucky do not get with other promotions in this region. We have guys that have fought in the UFC, King of the Cage , Strikeforce and a guy that was Josh Koschecks’s #1 pick on last seasons Ultimate Fighter show fighting right here in Pikeville, KY.
You have a stacked card. How does an Eastern Kentucky promotion draw such great talent?
With hours and hours of hard late night work. The fighters know that Gruesome MMA is a fighter first organization !
Give a fan who has never been to a live MMA show an idea of what to expect with Gruesome MMA.
A night of GREAT fights and entertainment. It’s the type of adrenaline rush that can’t be explained when your apart of a live MMA show, especially a Gruesome MMA show !!! We work hard and go the extra mile to ensure that all of our fans get the most out of there experience.
You were recently scheduled to fight for Strikeforce but had to withdraw due to injury. Hows your recovery going and when can we expect to see you back in action?
My recovery is gonna be a slow one. It usually takes somewhere around 6-7 months before you can get back into action. I planned to fight sometime around the end of September for Gruesome before my scheduled November 12th fight for King of the Cage in Michigan.
What does the future hold for Gruesome MMA ?
Big things, we planned to take the momentum from this card we have put together and keep running with it !
